Multi Day Hiking Tour in Samegrelo
- Tour Overview
While most travelers know Samegrelo for its tropical canyons and rich lowland cuisine, the region hides one of the most rugged, dramatic, and isolated mountain ranges in the Caucasus: the Egrisi Ridge. This multi-day wilderness backpacking expedition takes you far beyond the reach of roads and cell service. You will trek through ancient, moss-covered Colchic rainforests, scramble over sharp limestone passes, and camp beside spectacular, crystal-clear glacial lakes hidden deep within the peaks. This is a true expedition for pure backcountry explorers seeking raw nature and total isolation.
What You Will See & Experience
The Mystical Tobavarchkhili ("Silver Lakes"): Reach the ultimate crown jewel of Georgian trekking. Hidden at an altitude of 2,650 meters, the Great Tobavarchkhili Lake is a massive, crystal-clear body of water formed by glaciers, surrounded by jagged volcanic peaks. Because it can only be reached on foot, it remains completely pristine and untouched.
The Chain of Alpine Mirrors: Explore a series of smaller, equally enchanting glacial lakes scattered across the high ridge. You will trek past Tsakatskali Lake, Kailashi Lake (shaped strikingly like a heart), and Kaliashi Lake, each reflecting the dramatic moving clouds and sharp limestone cliffs.
The Ancient Colchic Rainforests: Begin your expedition climbing through lower valleys packed with dense, sub-tropical vegetation. You will hike underneath towering boxwood trees, prehistoric ferns, and massive rocks completely blanketed in thick emerald moss, creating an atmospheric, jungle-like environment.
The High Mountain Passes: Test your endurance by conquering the formidable Natakhtari and Toba Passes, both sitting at nearly 3,000 meters above sea level. Reaching these high ridges unlocks sweeping, dramatic vistas stretching from the lowlands of Samegrelo all the way to the jagged peaks of neighboring Svaneti.
Isolated Shepherd Culture: Meet the resilient Megrelian shepherds who spend their summers completely isolated in the high pastures. You will stay near or camp alongside their primitive wooden shelters (Asuda), sample fresh, smoky mountain cheese, and experience their legendary, authentic hospitality.
Roaring Canyons and Waterfalls: Track the rushing waters of the Magana and Jalara rivers as they plunge down from the glaciers. The trails cross roaring torrents via rustic log bridges and pass by spectacular, unnamed waterfalls crashing through hidden stone gorges.
The Magical Magana Valley: Wind your way down through a massive, pristine river basin carpeted in vibrant summer wildflowers. This sweeping valley offers an incredibly peaceful trek as you begin your descent back toward civilization.
A Triumphant Megrelian Feast: Celebrate completing one of the Caucasus' toughest treks with a massive traditional dinner in a village guesthouse. You will indulge in a rich, comforting plate of authentic Elargji (cornmeal cooked into a beautifully elastic blend with massive amounts of fresh Sulguni cheese) and spicy Satsivi (chicken in a rich walnut sauce).
