Lake Paliastomi Boat Expedition
- Discover a side of Georgia few travelers ever see. Hidden within the UNESCO-protected Kolkheti National Park near the coastal city of Poti, Lake Paliastomi is a majestic expanse of water and the gateway to one of Europe's most unique wetland ecosystems. Known as the "Georgian Amazon," this tranquil, mist-shrouded environment is a wild paradise of relict temperate rainforests, impassable bulrush thickets, and vibrant waterways. It is a world-class destination for birdwatchers, kayakers, and nature enthusiasts seeking absolute tranquility.
What You Will See & Experience
The "Georgian Amazon" Pontoon Cruise: Board a covered pontoon or a swift motorboat to glide across the glassy, mirror-like surface of Lake Paliastomi. The lake sits just below sea level and is separated from the Black Sea by a narrow sandbar, creating a uniquely serene aquatic atmosphere.
The Mystical Pichori River Gorge: Follow the boat route as it leaves the open lake and narrows into the dense Pichori River. As you navigate the water, the surrounding trees and low-hanging moss close in over the riverbank, creating the distinct, magical feeling of cutting through an uncharted jungle.
UNESCO-Protected Colchic Relict Forests: Step off at designated resting points to marvel at the rare wetland forests that have survived since the ice age. The boggy soil is carpeted with unique flora, including gigantic royal ferns and vast fields of yellow and white water lilies that form lush "bedsheets" over the water.
The Birdwatching Tower: Scale the park’s wooden observation tower overlooking the peatlands. Lake Paliastomi sits right on a major migratory highway between Northern Eurasia and Africa, serving as a vital sanctuary for over 190 bird species, including rare, red-listed waterfowl, storks, and eagles.
Fisher’s Island & Local Traditions: Cruise past local, stilt-supported fishing huts and visit areas where traditional Black Sea fishing methods are still kept alive. If you are an avid angler, the park administration allows managed sport and fly fishing for catfish, pike, and carp in the river.
The Lost Legend of Palaeostomi: Learn the haunting local myth of the lake's creation. According to ancient lore and underwater archaeological surveys, a thriving ancient Colchian settlement once stood here before the ground abruptly shifted and sank, swallowing the city beneath the waves.
