Day Trip to Armenia

Tour Overview
Journey south across the border into Armenia, a land of stark volcanic landscapes, profound medieval history, and the very first nation to adopt Christianity as a state religion in 301 AD. This comprehensive multi-day tour balances the bustling, rose-colored avenues of the modern capital with a dramatic loop through deep basalt canyons and high-altitude alpine lakes. You will discover spectacular monasteries carved directly into sheer cliff faces, stand before the majestic volcanic silhouette of Mount Ararat, and experience a rich culinary heritage born along the ancient branches of the Silk Road.

What You Will See & Experience
Yerevan: The Pink City: Explore Armenia鈥檚 vibrant capital, famous for its unique Soviet-era architecture built from local pink volcanic tuff stone. You will walk through Republic Square to watch the dancing fountains, climb the monumental Yerevan Cascade open-air museum for views stretching across the city, and visit a historic distillery to sample legendary Armenian brandy.

The Ancient Garni Temple: Step back into classical antiquity at the only standing Greco-Roman colonnaded building in the entire post-Soviet space. Perched dramatically on a triangular cliff ridge, this 1st-century temple overlooks the spectacular Azat River Gorge.

The Cave Monastery of Geghard Monastery: Explore this jaw-dropping UNESCO World Heritage complex hidden inside a rugged mountain amphitheater. Founded in the 4th century, many of the monastery's incredible churches and tombs are carved directly out of the solid rock cliff side, creating unmatched acoustics for traditional sacred choral singing.

The Symphony of Stones: Take a short drive or a light trek into the Garni Gorge to witness an unbelievable geological phenomenon. You will stand beneath a massive, vertical cliff face composed of thousands of symmetrical, hanging basalt hexagonal columns that look exactly like a colossal stone pipe organ.

Khor Virap Monastery: The View of Ararat: Visit one of Armenia's most sacred pilgrimage sites, sitting right on the closed border with Turkey. Here, you can climb down into the deep underground pit where Saint Gregory the Illuminator was imprisoned for 13 years before converting the kingdom. The monastery offers the absolute closest and most iconic view of the snow-capped, 5,165-meter twin peaks of Mount Ararat.

Lake Sevan & Sevanavank Monastery: Travel up into the mountains to witness the "Jewel of Armenia," one of the largest high-altitude freshwater lakes in the world. You'll climb the stairs of the rocky peninsula to tour the 9th-century black stone churches of Sevanavank, framing a breathtaking contrast against the brilliant blue water below.

The Dilijan Forest Oasis: Escape the dry volcanic plains and step into "Armenia's Switzerland." This lush, heavily forested national park area features charming 19th-century wooden architecture, artisan workshops, and hidden medieval monastic masterpieces like Haghartsin hidden deep in the woods.

The Wings of Tatev & The Vorotan Gorge: Journey deep into southern Armenia to ride the world鈥檚 longest non-stop double-track aerial tramway. You will glide smoothly over the breathtaking, 500-meter-deep Vorotan River Gorge to reach the majestic Tatev Monastery, a 9th-century fortress of enlightenment sitting on the edge of a sheer cliff.

Lavash Making & Armenian Barbecue: Get hands-on with local culinary traditions. You will join an Armenian family to watch Lavash bread slapped onto the inner clay walls of a subterranean Tonir oven, and indulge in a traditional feast of Khorovats (juicy, fire-grilled skewers of marinated meats and vegetables).
