Day Trip to Kazbegi and Gudauri

Tour Overview
Leave the lowlands behind for an unforgettable journey along the historic Georgian Military Highway, cutting directly through the heart of the Greater Caucasus. This high-altitude day trip perfectly pairs the thrill of Georgia's premier alpine resort, Gudauri, with the timeless, rugged majesty of the Kazbegi region. You will wind past turquoise reservoirs, cross dramatic mountain passes, stand on soaring panoramic viewing platforms, and look up at iconic 14th-century churches framed by the massive, ice-capped volcanic silhouette of Mount Kazbek.

What You Will See & Experience
The Lakeside Ananuri Fortress: Make your first stop at this spectacular, 17th-century castle complex sitting right on the shores of the turquoise Aragvi River reservoir. You will explore the heavy stone defensive walls, climb the watchtowers, and admire the intricate chain carvings on the facade of the historic church inside.

The Black & White Aragvi Confluence: Pause along the highway to witness a fascinating natural phenomenon near Pasanauri. Here, two distinct mountain rivers鈥攖he Clear (White) Aragvi and the Muddy (Black) Aragvi鈥攎erge into a single channel, flowing side-by-side without immediately mixing their contrasting colors.

The Soaring Gudauri Viewpoint (Russia鈥揋eorgia Friendship Monument): Stand on the edge of a sheer cliff at the highest point of the highway near the ski resort of Gudauri. This colossal, semi-circular concrete monument features vibrant, sweeping mosaic murals detailing regional history and folklore, opening up to jaw-dropping, dizzying views over the Devil's Valley below.

The Gudauri Ski Resort Panoramic Lift: Step off into Georgia鈥檚 top winter sports destination. During the snow-covered winter and spring seasons, the resort is a playground for skiers and snowboarders; in the summer and autumn, you can ride the open-air cable cars up the green slopes to enjoy crisp mountain air and sweeping trail views.

The Travertine Mineral Springs: As you descend the Jvari Pass toward Kazbegi, stop to marvel at a unique geological formation right on the roadside. Natural, iron-rich carbonated water bubbles up from the earth, coating a massive, terraced rock slope in a vibrant, glowing sheet of orange and cream-colored limestone travertine.

The Iconic Gergeti Trinity Church: Arrive in Stepantsminda (Kazbegi) and take a 4WD vehicle up the steep ridge to reach Georgia鈥檚 most famous architectural postcard. Sitting at 2,170 meters, this 14th-century stone church stands in absolute isolation, framed perfectly by the massive, 5,047-meter snow-capped volcanic peak of Mount Kazbek rising behind it.
