Day Trip to Rainbow Mountains and David Gareja

Tour Overview
Journey into Georgia鈥檚 most surreal and unexpected landscape. Leaving the green valleys behind, this day trip takes you into the semi-desert badlands of the Kakheti region, running along the border with Azerbaijan. You will explore a striking, martian-like world of multi-colored, undulating clay hills known as the Rainbow Mountains, before stepping into history at the monumental 6th-century rock-hewn cave monastery complex of David Gareja. This tour is an absolute dream for photographers, hikers, and history buffs looking to experience Georgia鈥檚 hidden, desert wilderness.

What You Will See & Experience
The Surreal Rainbow Mountains: Trek through a vast, alien landscape of rolling clay dunes and ridges. Over millions of years, mineral-rich soil and erosion have painted these hills in vivid, alternating stripes of deep red, orange, yellow, and purple, creating a breathtaking visual effect that looks like a watercolor painting come to life.

The Ancient David Gareji monastery: Explore the historic Lavra complex, the beating heart of a massive monastic network founded by the holy father St. David Garejeli in the 6th century. You will walk through stone courtyards, medieval towers, and active living quarters carved by hand directly into the sheer desert cliffs.

The Udabno Cave Frescoes: (Subject to border trail availability) Hike up the high ridge overlooking the Azerbaijani plains to reach the Udabno Caves. Here, you can peer inside ancient rock cells to marvel at beautifully preserved 9th- to 13th-century religious frescoes depicting the Last Supper and the life of Saint David, completely isolated in the wilderness.

A Scenic Semi-Desert Trek: Set out on a moderate, 2- to 3-hour loop hike over the ridge lines. The trail cuts through dramatic badlands, offering wide-open, dizzying panoramic views that stretch out infinitely across the plains of neighboring Azerbaijan.

The Boondocks of Udabno Village: Break for a late lunch or a refreshing drink in Udabno, a quirky, isolated village sitting in the middle of the desert plain. Originally settled by eco-migrants from the high mountains of Svaneti, the village has transformed into a colorful, bohemian oasis offering cold craft beers and hearty, home-cooked food.

Chirukhistshkali Lake (The Salt Lake): Make a brief, fascinating stop at a seasonal, blindingly white salt crust lake hidden in the desert basin. The cracked earth and crystalized salt shores offer an incredible backdrop for unique, minimalist minimalist photography.
